Uxmal is located 50 miles (1 hour) from Mérida in the Puuc Route, One of the largest Mayan cities in the classic period between 600 and 1.000 A.D., during those 400 years of power and prestige it was the capital of a vast territory on the peninsula. Uxmal is a part of the Puuc Route, a region of a late classical architectural style marked by finely cut vencer masonry and intricate facades of carved stone.
The name Uxmal means “thrice-built” in Mayan, referring to the construction of its highest structure, the Pyramid of the Magician. The Maya would often build a new temple over an existing one, and in this case five stages of construction have actually been found.
It is considered one of the most beautiful Mayan cities because of its splendid Mayan art on limestone murals and refined architecture. You will see the impressive mask of Chac, the god of rain, on the buildings facades, as well as many others figures.
After visit Uxmal we will continue to Kabah which was a city under the dominium of kingdom of Uxmal, that includes the Kodz Pop or the temple of the Rain God Mask, visit the Arch that supposed to be the entrance of the city.
One of the most prominent buildings at Kabah is the Palace of the Masks. This large building´s Chenes-style facade is completely covered with 250 masks of the rain god Chac, who is sometimes called ¨The Big Nosed God¨. It is one of the most impressive in Maya architecture. Similar to other sites in the Puuc region.
A large pyramid at Kabah is still awaiting to be uncovered in the future. No one knows what artistic treasures may be found under the overgrown jungle trees and vines that cover its surface |
