Izamal is located in the middle of the peninsula, its history is very attached to religious events. Izamal was conquered by the Spaniards and the Franciscan monks built the largest convent in this continent.
Its probably one of the eldest cities in Yucatan, founded in the 4th century A.D. by Itzamna, leader and patriarch of the Mayan people. Religion has been closely related to its history, since the Spaniard conquerors made of this city a Christian sanctuary to convert Indians to Catholicism.
The Franciscan convent was build over one of the Mayan Pyramid. It is also famous for the history of the monk Fray Diego De Landa who burned all the Indians scripts and then, feeling remorse for what he had done tried to rewrite all he could remember of the ways of the Indians.
Known as the "City of three cultures", Izamal bring together elements of the prehispanic, colonial and contemporary eras. Numerous prehispanic constructions, some currently under restoration, are located within the city, providing a beautiful contrast next to the remains of Colonial Era.
It is here where The Pope John Paul II visited in 1993.
Izamal is a jewel of the colonial city and all the building painted an egg-yolk yellow, making the entire town look like a movie set.
Enjoy a calesa ride in the main street of Izamal. |
